Godspeed Danny Magoo Chandler

Posted: May 5, 2010 in Uncategorized

Heard the sad news today that Danny Magoo Chandler passed away last night. He was a true icon of our sport, only man to win all 4 moto’s of the Trophee and Motocross des Nations in one year 1982. GP and Superbiker’s winner.

Here’s a short clip from his lifestory DVD ” Magoo”

I had the pleasure to meet up with Danny many times, when he was a rider winning the French 500cc GP in 1985 and more recently at the Motocross des Nations in Budds Creek, Donington and Franciacorta.  You should have seen the way the fans greeted him and how much pleasure he got from signing autographs, chatting to them about the old days and how a  joke or comment could light up his fan’s faces.

Event though he was wheelchair bound since 1986, he still had a great zest for life and was a champion of riders safety for young kids.

More recently old friends such as Brad Lackey, Bob Hannah, David Bailey and many others had raised funds to get him a fully equipped van so he could attend more events. We also did a fundraiser for danny with the Magoo T-shirt design, many of you bought.

At the Donnington Park MXoN,  Danny’s best friend Kris Egbert bought the original of my painting, but asked that I keep it and show it to his many fans at races worldwide. Kris said if anything happened to Magoo, he one day hoped it would hang in the AMA Hall of fame.

I will speak to Kris and see if we can fulfill his wishes and hopefully this painting will help us remember a true champion and icon, I feel honoured to be able to call a friend.
